3D NEW YORKER

What’s your name and where are you from?

Sean Wehrli (aka Oskar White, photography alias) and I'm from Flint, MI.

Tell me about the beginning of your photographic career and what drove/inspired you to gravitate towards visual arts?

Well I've been drawing and shooting photos since I was a kid. Music videos and the work of Anton Corbijn, Spike Jones, Mark Romanack, & Michel Gondry.

What influences you to create?

Everything, the world is so beautiful I just want to capture it. An unconscious drive that can't be ignored. I create because I was created to.

If you couldn’t create art what would you be doing?

Something Science & Technology related, maybe engineering or inventing.

Explain your vision/process of creating 3D photography what drove you to approach photography this way?

The 3D gifs have been around for a long time in various forms and there are a handful of people making them now. One of my missions is to show people that its more than just a gimmick, but actually a valid art medium. They add so much more life to a captured moment. As far as the logistics, I use a couple 3D film cameras from the 80s. One is called the Nimslo and one is the Nishika n8000.

The blog comes from my love of people and a passion to study them. I wanted to create my own version of Humans of New York with more emphasis on Art/Design. I decided to include their careers, because it creates an interesting contrast with their style and perhaps tells you the most about someone in the fewest words.

If you could go back 5 years from now what advice would you give the younger version of yourself?

Make more films and follow through finish what you've started.

What do you think makes New York so special? And artistically how do you think NYC effects your creativity?

Without doubt, its the people. Its the only place in America where you can walk past thousands of people, just on your way to work and so much diversity. I like to study the people, watch them, listen to them, talk to them. I'm looking for the truths inside human nature and the passions of the human spirit.

What are your next steps moving forward? Do you have a show coming up or anything of that nature?

I'm starting to collaborate with other creatives that I've met through the blog. I have plans for a music video using a girl I shot as the main subject. I'm doing some fashion/editorial shoots with designers I met. In talks to do client work, events, ... there's so much I want to do, but mostly I just want to keep getting better. As far as show, I'd like to shoot more first, but eventually want to do a show using digital frames and invite all the people I've photographed. They are the art, not the photos, I'm just a collector really.

Who are some people that inspire you?

My family, wife, daughter, Anton Corbijn, Kanye West, Virgil Abloh, Hayao Miyazaki, Terrence Malik, Jeff Nichols, the Coen Brothers, Tears for Fears, I could go on forever, anyone creating, anyone with great passion.

Best thing about NYC? – name one thing.

Already said it, but once again its the people, ha.

3 years from now… (fill in the blank)

I want to be making films.
